Analysis of Saprolegniasis in Koi Fish

Estimated reading period: 2 minute
Article words: 370

What is saprolegniasis? The fish has a layer of "white hair" on the body. If it is not treated in time, the fish will gradually weaken and die when the bacteria invade the body. When the bacteria is parasitic on the fish gill, this will cause the saprolegniasis disease, which can cause the death of fishes. Let’s read more below to know its cause, treatment, and precautionary measures.

1.Cause of disease

Saprolegniasis is caused by a filamentous fungus, such as water mold, mildew, and SAPROLEGNIA. Most of which occur in pools with a large number of fishes or turbid stagnant water. If the fish is thin or traumatic, it is more susceptible to infection. A large number of cotton-like hyphae, it is also known as white hair disease.

2.Treatment

Wash the ill fish with 1.5% to 2.5% edible salt water to remove the hair, then apply 2% mercurochrome, and give it the oxytetracycline bath. The wound and the water molds of ill fish need to be applied with a 0.1% to 1% malachite green aqueous solution. Soak the fish for 3 to 5 minutes with a 1:155000 malachite green solution and then soak the fish in a 10 mg/kg potassium permanganate aqueous solution for half an hour.

3. Precautionary measures

When pulling nets, fishing, transporting and stocking fish, we should be more careful and do not let the fish hurt. The fish eggs are immersed in a 1:15000 concentration malachite green aqueous solution for 10-15 minutes once a day for 3 days to prevent saprolegniasis. You can apply gentian violet or potassium permanganate to the wounded fish to prevent them from getting saprolegniasis.

We can know from above that preventing fishes from getting hurt and keeping aquarium water clean is very vital for your fishes’ health. We suggest you change your fish tank water 2-3 times per week and use a good aquarium filter, for example, the
In-Tank Filter 5W 400L/H. It can be used for pumping, increasing oxygen, cyclically filtering, easy to position with suction cups or clips to attach and hang on the aquarium rim.
